We have been approached by some members querying life insurance at this time so just as a reminder the NZRDA insures the life of members to the tune of $10,000. This is if the member should die from any cause including suicide.
NZRDA took out a policy for all its members lives over 10 years ago now, following the death of one of our members, an event that made us realise that in addition to the emotional trauma any such event inflicts, there are also financial ones. We might not be able to help the emotional consequences of what is always such a tragic event, but we can help ease the financial burden.
Members’ families have been assisted in a number of ways from the policy, from the immediate consequences for partners especially those with small children and/or a mortgage through to our colleagues from overseas whose family wish to return the body home for burial. NZRDA immediately pays out the money (albeit on production of a death certificate where possible), so should there be no will or the estate not be able to be settled, money is immediately available to tide the family over. Even if it simply covers the cost of the funeral, the payment has proven to be a welcome contribution at a very difficult time.
