Mentoring Skills for Doctors
The training of colleagues is a fundamental principle of the medical profession. As doctors progress through their careers, it is expected that they educate those that come after them. While most adhere to the obligation, the assumption that RMOs innately know how to teach others is not true. An RMOs inability to appropriately provide training can lead to friction among colleagues and in extreme cases, allegations of bullying or inappropriate behaviour.
Mentoring Skills for Doctors is a world-renowned program, that is run by Oxford Medical. It will cover the psychology of mentoring as well as the necessary tools for how to support the training of other RMOs. You can read the course outline here.
Unlike the Teach the Teacher training, which runs over two days and covers teaching theories, principles, and tools needed to train other RMOs in greater depth, Mentoring Skills for Doctors is a one-day course focused on 1:1 teaching practice. It’s ideal for those with prior teaching experience looking to refresh or enhance their skills.

The Mentoring Skills for Doctors course is a tutor-led training programme that draws on a range of coaching and mentoring models. It is adaptable to suit different learners needs and supports the development of realistic learning plans. The workshop combines input, discussion, practice and feedback. With a small cohort of 8 attendees per session, the tutor can tailor the content to the group’s interests, helping you get the most out of the experience, including delivering your own teaching sessions and giving and receiving feedback from fellow delegates in a safe, supportive environment.
